There once was a guy - a god, they say. He was our kinda god - trickster god, but not a malevolent trickster. He was always a goofy optimist, and played little pranks for fun - he was the reason you'd get muddy right after a bath, or why you'd get a cold right before a speech.

Anyways, he fell in love with the fire god's daughter, Passion. Madly in love. Stupidly in love.

The fire god, who was also a music god, and a god of life, however, didn't want his daughter to go to the prankster, and rather wanted her more security in the god of riches, or somethin'.

Eventually the trickster bet his love for her on a game of cards.

They swore an oath to play a good game.

The fire-god was winning, but he didn't want to loose her. Desperate, he cheated. The Fire god found this out, and because of the nature of the oath, he would have taken the life of the trickster. Instead, he decided on a different plan. Being kinda a jerk, he decided to crush the trickster's spirit before killing him.

He offered a to spare him and offer his daughter's hand in marriage, if he could dance on embers until the fire god said stop. So he kept dancing, confident that he would win Passion.

But the fire god never said stop, and the trickster kept dancing until he burnt to white ash.

Love makes you stupid.

Not always.  Nothing about love is so absolute.

Correction *Wags his finger* - Nothing at all is so absolute. *Turns his hand into a chop as he swipes in front of him. He puts his hands behind his head.*

Quit apologising for Love and admit that she ain't nearly as great as everyone says she is.

Call me a cynic, but I'm all too sceptical of everyone saying she's the best thing in the world. Why do people hate or go to war? 'Cause Love makes them want to defend someone. Just look - the entire history of discrimination and xenophobia in Valen doesn't amount to "Oh, the Ansligans will torture me!", it's "They're after our pure Valenian women". Love turns people nasty. Love turns them into Malkior.

Maybe it's not the best thing in the world.  I never said it doesn't have it's downsides.  I didn't say it was perfect bliss every time; it isn't.  I understand that people go crazy from it.  People kill themselves or kill others over it.  It affects people on the deepest level.  But ultimately, what affects whether someone does something cruel or stupid is their capacity to do things like that in the first place.  Love is just a catalyst, a spark that ignites what's already there.  I love Julia, but you don't see me deserting or resigning, and abandoning my career, to go stay with her.

Eh, that wasn't well said... but you get what I mean, right?

I suppose... but, uh... I don't know. What do you think of the whole nature versus nurture debate? You said something like "a person's capacity to do something in the first place". As best I understand it, though, human beings are ultimately the same - nobody has an innate capacity, only what shapes them from the outside. All of nature is like that.

And I suppose I could try to support that, too, you if you want.

But you? Your thoughts?

*Lakt closes his eyes, with his hands behind his hand. His voice becomes louder and higher.*

Tshh!

Man, I suck at transitions! *Now, softer and lower.*

But, I dunno... I really don't like people talking about people's natures.

No one's static. You see those clouds above? You see how they flow, how they mix, how they dance? We're the same. The whole of human history has been the overcoming of nature. The invention of the wheel, zum Beispiel, was nothing more than an attempt to relieve the natural burden of labor - but was that because we are by nature lazy? Well, that and slaves supercharged agriculture. Now, unlike, say, how things are in Ansliga, we can support, like, 100 times as many people because we still work just as hard at overcoming the challenges of nature.

So are we lazy? We made things easy. But we worked harder. That's a contradiction. Heck, thanks to innovation, we even overcame the need for slavery. Even the serfs and peasants are gettin' more rights as the role of the nobility is being drawn back. We're overcoming the need to be that. Human beings are like that.

Even love. If Ansliga is anything to go by, we were in bands of hunter gatherers before anything like our notion of a family came about. Everybody was who they were and judged how they worked. Didn't matter who liked who, everybody and everything was the community's. Then when farming came about, women became property, and it didn't who loved who, the nastiest and most vile guy could do whatever he wanted to her 'cuz he owned her. Then we have now, and while women are startin' to be treated more equally, we still do the same stupid stuff for the same superficial reasons.

Maybe one day we'll overcome that. We're clouds, so maybe we'll fly over the horizon.

Yeah, someday... we keep getting better, you know?  As a people, we keep improving little by little over the centuries.  Who knows what we'll be like in a thousand years...

No one. I mean, if the calender's to be believed, it's like there wasn't even a thousand years ago...

*Waits a second.*

That was a terrible attempt at a joke...

*Sits up.*

I wonder if it would at all be possible to study those clouds better... like, for real...

Maybe... telescoping. I don't know, what do you think?

Well... some people think that fog is actually clouds that came from the sky to the ground for some reason... I dunno if I believe it though, the clouds up there seem so different than fog...

Hmm... Maybe... If we bribe a good shadow-warper like, I don't know, Mainyu.... He could be upside-down in a cloud with a jar, fall, close the jar, then warp to safety. Hmm... Any comments?

Clouds cast shadows... but... I don't know, kinda dumm. I just... Hmm...

I don't think this world is well studied. Maybe that's what I can do with myself - Instead of guns and death, knowledge and life. I've told you, my family - Malkior too - always wanted me to be a soldier, yeah?

Then I guess we've talked about it before. Things are off... Always... off... Greenglass should be here in a few days. If Richard doesn't join him, I'm sure he'd keep himself busy ordering people around. I'll try to get a few experiments ready for around that time. Scientific method, you know? I guess... I'll start with what keeps things in motion. Energy. You gonna be in? ...You said you had something planned, though, right?

Oh... Really... My memory must be shot. Everything seems like it's falling away, you know? Remind me to fetch you for the experiment. I'll never remember on my own. Chances are I'll forget to go to the library first...

*A few seconds of silence pass, as Lakt begins to stare into the clouds again.*

Anything else you care to talk about? Love? Ethics? Politics? Metaphysics? Epistemology? Morality?

Apparently they said I had managed to. I think the town was just looking for an excuse to get ridda me, though. I really don't know. Kyros said it takes a lot outta him. Malik seemed almost godlike on the battlefield. Malkior seems to think it can be taught, like, to normal people, for whatever reason. There was this old hag who terrorized the town I come from... She... I don't know if her magic was real, fake, or imagined. But they say it turned her into a devil woman. So... I think its a big responsibility. One people don't get to choose. Like nobility. Common folk always want it; nobles complain, wage war, and tell the people they sent to war they can't have it. I suppose... I'd like to be a mage, if only because I could look at things better... But, I'm sure they'd really crack down on my antics that way. You?

Until I went to Ifas, I always wanted to be able to use magic.  But I've heard it's really hard... And that it's not all fun and games.  It's a massive responsibility, apparently, and the government sort of... Bothers you a lot if they find out until you agree to undergo training and schooling, within the limits of the law of course.  And people get jealous too, remember Ted and Brent?  Best friends when they were little, and then look how things turned out.  I don't know if I'd rather be magical or not these days... It seems like it's more trouble than it's worth sometimes.  Although admittedly, it is worth a damn lot in some respects.

I heard occasionally a murder's happened when a magician refuses to pledge allegiance. Usually committed by a sort of royal secret police or something. Tends to get erased from records, though. Got in a bad argument with Malkior over it. Not to mention the stigma in some of the smaller villages. Where I come from, if you know magic you're thought to kinda...

Well... It involves dead bodies and decadent behaviour. Apparent that sort of power has historically bred some sociopaths. I'm content with staying plain, though. If I wanna find out what magic does, I'll date a witch. I'm much more interested in what's going on with the natural world, and its natural magic.

Yup.  The world still has a lot of mysteries don't it?  Every time we make a discovery, we just discover more things we didn't know we don't know.

Hm... *Said in an agreeing tone. Letting silence fall, Lakt closes his eyes. A few minutes pass.*

This seems like a good place for a nap.
