*Kyros sits in his chair, legs crossed and feet on his desk, leaning back in his chair and staring at the ceiling in thought.  In his right hand he holds a quill between his index and third fingers, twirling it around very slowly.  His left hand hangs limp at his side, still not fully healed after the confrontation with Superbia.  On his desk is a bit of an epic poem; several pages of verse titled "The Silent One" are neatly stacked in one corner while another page, finished only halfway, is out in the center.*

Hmm...

*He sighs and looks at the unfinished page, then out the window for a while.  He is startled slightly by a quiet knock on the door, and he puts his feet on the ground and crosses the length of the room to open the door.*

*Kyros opens the door to find a familiar black-cloaked figures standing in the doorway*

Good evening. *Easten says*

Yes, and I still have residence set up there, but I thought I'd drop by for a quick visit on my way to Seag.  It's about that time again for me to assess the state of foreign nations, as I do from time to time.

But in any case, happy birthday.

It's your birthday.  October twenty-second.  Your fortieth, I believe.

Well... yes, I suppose it is, I hadn't realized... *He says, glancing at the calendar on the wall*

I just wasn't... expecting.... you to say something like that, of all people.  It's uh... uncharacteristic of you.

I admit so.  But I happened to be passing through, and it seemed more significant than usual.  You're halfway through your life now, hm?

Yeah, maybe.  You're the last person who should be making that call, though.  Refresh my memory, how old are you, exactly?

*Easten smiles and lets out a small chuckle*

Nobody knows, actually *he says, spreading out his arms in a sort of "too bad" gesture* Not even me.  I forgot a long time ago.

Fascinating.  It's a strange concept to twist my mind around, not knowing how old one is.  We think of it as something so internal and an absolute truth about ourselves, part of our existence... How many summers I've lived through, how many years I've done this, how long I've just... been around.  *He sighs, but grins a little bit* It's messing with my mind right now... I'm trying to imagine not knowing how old I am and it feels like I'm really missing a key piece of knowledge that's vital and necessary for... something.

I know how that feels... It's a feeling of being disoriented, lost... It's not really the knowledge itself that affects us like this, it's our perception.  Our age is something we always know and are reminded of constantly throughout our natural lives.  Not knowing is to take away something that we measure ourselves by in relation to everything else, thus we feel that feeling of disorientation and uncertainty in where we stand.  But for my part... I've found that outliving everything else around me multiple times has changed my perception.  I no longer need to measure myself in relation to everything.  Probably because I can assume I'm older or as old as anything man-made I see.  And yet despite all that I stare at the trees in the heart of the forest, at the mountains, and the flowing rivers and am still humbled by these wonders that exist in the natural world.  For all the years I've lived, through all the kingdoms I've seen rise, develop, and fall, and watched new ones take their place, and fall as well... I could have spent all that time, every day of every year of every century staring at that river or that tree, and it would have been there that entire time... It's why I have such a deep respect for the natural world.  Everything is so timeless... Surely those rivers haven't been there forever, but they have been going so long as to make our minds take the first step into the concept of something truly eternal; this concept of true eternity, of going on... forever, without any sort of end, defies any intuitive way of thinking; it simply... doesn't register.

A little bit.  *He glances over the poem on Kyros's desk* "The Silent One" hm?  Is this about me? *He says, the end of his lips curling in a little smile*

No actually, sorry.  It's actually about a man who hardly ever speaks or intervenes in the world.  It's about inaction, bystanding, and regret.  You know, seize the day, follow your heart, all that stuff.

Always an affecting topic... I'm glad to see you still write.  It's something I haven't had the motivation to do for a long time.  I'm just getting lazy I suppose.  I'll do what's necessary, and debate when I'm challenged and answer when asked, but I've no incentive to actively express my thoughts about various topics for the sake of it.  It's an art, really and I enjoy reading others' works, but... *He shrugs*

As a former instructor like yourself, I know there's normally something rewarding in passing on knowledge, so that it can be carried on to generations beyond you.  But when you know that you will outlive your students, that anyone you teach will eventually live out their lives and die and you'll go on... it's different.  You lose the motivation for teaching.

That's too bad... It's ironic that you're the most ideal teacher, since you have so much more to teach than anyone else could have.  And you were a good teacher too... Now I find myself wishing you would write a book so I can read it.  No doubt you would have some interesting things to say.

But anyway... Have you come bearing gifts? *He asks smiling, in a mock-hopeful tone*

In fact I have.  It seemed the customary thing to do.

*His hand withdraws into the folds of his cloak and removes two objects.  The first is a black leather-bound book, cornered and trimmed in gold.  Silver lettering across the center of the cover reads "On Gods and Men - Swělas".  The second is a thin tube about two feet long.*

Oh my... *He says, taking the book carefully* You won't see many of these around... Thank you, this should be an enlightening read.

It is.  But this should be even better than philosophy and debate.  *He says, proffering the metal tube*
