*As Easten leaves Kyros' office, he observes General Drauch's name on one of the doors down the hallway.  He hesitates, then decides to see if Drauch is inside.*

No purpose whatsoever... I never seek out small talk.  I must be getting bored.  Only human, only human, unfortunately.  As always I wonder what lies beyond human existence, and I wonder if it is even possible for me to ascend there... provided no death involved... since death is a one-way path, and I cannot come back if I discover there is nothing else.  How much time I would have wasted in that endeavor if that were to be the case.  Hmm... I wonder if I've reached the limits of reality.  Well, thoughts for another time, I suppose.

*He knocks three times on the door, then waits patiently.*

Come in!

*A tinge of annoyance in his voice, a pinch of impatience. Not much beyond, as if his tone were the held breath of an exhausted teacher.*

*Easten opens the door and steps inside*

Good afternoon, General.  How do you fare?

*Surprised, Malkior speaks with some joy - likely relief - in his voice*

Oh, good afternoon, Lord Easten! I can't say that I was expecting you. I'm fine, I suppose. How are you?

I am well, thank you.  I was on my way to Seag, and came to stop by, as it were, since Moonridge was along the way.  How has your assignment been thus far?

To be honest, sir, it's been the dullest thing I've ever done. I mean, yes, the incident with the leftover mercenaries was something else, but that whole episode scared off all the good recruits. And those that are here are parasites! Two foreigners, each taking Valen resources - food, water, shelter, and effort - for their own purposes, not to reinvest in - and reimburse - our country. Two tricksters who are too disobedient to command, and then Rolf. I suppose it would be fine if it were still coming out of Black's pocket, but now that that responsibility is on the ignoble - the relative poor - we need more government assistance. I really don't think it's all worth it.

With so few and such delinquent recruits, nothing happens. When I do host a marching drill or a dueling practice, only a borderline unteachable boy or a borderline psychopath show up. 1 person is not enough to form a phalanx, 1 person is not enough to duel.

Sorry about the long-winded rant, but I've been wondering how to attract more recruits. Do you have any ideas?

Everyone has the freedom to do as they please with the knowledge they gain.  Within limits of course.  It may not serve our purposes or we may disagree with their choices, and I agree that perhaps there are other results I'd like to see, and other uses that these skills could be used for.  But traditionally I've always advocated a hands-off position on these matters; do not assert and exercise power unless absolutely necessary.  When those with power begin to exercise it in situations where it is not of urgent need, even with the best intentions and yes, even with the best results, I've observed this always eventually leads to corruption and tyranny.  Even if it sometimes takes a few years, or a few rulers in some cases.  Just my own attitude, of course.  I know there are better uses you and I would favor of these people, but in the end it is not our choice to make, unfortunate as it is.  This idea of freedom does not always yield the most efficient results as we're both painfully aware of, but in the end I believe that it takes important steps toward the better society, and to that effect, adds more than the disadvantages detract from it.

As for recruitment, I'm certain as always there are young men in town who want to learn a little more about combat... even if they don't know it. *he grins just a tad*  Perhaps an exhibition match to spark some interest?

*In the break between Easten's phrases, but without interruption.*

I suppose... but not even freedom allows freedom from the scarcity of the resources available. It's just that Malik and Yuusha are not free. They are neither citizens nor members of the Valenian populace.  They have no vote, here or in their homeland - nor will they. They cannot fight for freedom until they themselves have become free. I simply fear that they will use our gift as a weapon against freedom. But I suppose you're right. I'm sure it's just a debate no one will win anyway.

*Malkior folds his hands together, fingers interwoven, waiting for a plan to weave. He picks up, as Easten speaks.*

That's an interesting plan! I like it, some action.

*He cracks his knuckles, speaking with an almost giddy tone - the sort of excitement in Lakt's voice when up to mischief. Without any connotations of ill will but of a sort of playful put-downs.*

Now the only questions are who? You, Cloaky? Me? Kyros? Perhaps we ought to force the students to combat, to show that those city-slicker punks that they can learn something!

*The ideas flowing through his mind overtake him, to the point that he seems to forget another person is in the room. As he scribbles on a piece of parchment, he thinks aloud:*

Malik's about at the level of teacher, so he and... him *a fingers taps in Easten's direction.*

Kyros, Me.

So Rolf, Yuusha; Marja, Hunter. Yes, that would work.

A graduate. I don't know if you've fought him before. You remember him from the chamber of fire? I shouldn't have to remind you.

Besides, I'm sure you'll wipe the floor with him. Consider it a work out, like cracking your knuckles before writing a letter.

*He pauses for a second, looking up at Easten.*

Have you spoken to General Kyros as of recent? He mentioned something about writing a novel.

I'd rather not fight him... It would be too one-sided.  An exhibition match needs to be fairly equal so the results are uncertain.  You can Kyros should be enough, you're both rather well known and the match should be good.

And yes, I just came back from his office.  He's writing an epic poem, it seems.  He hasn't been out much I take it?

*Almost with a tinge of worry to his voice.* I do usually prefer to keep business and personal lives separate, so to say, but he keeps everything to himself. I learned more about his personal life from stories I heard at Ifas. I mean, he's quick to share with the students, and occassionally when he wants something or is pushing his cohesion theory, he'll go all out explaining everything. But I've heard a story or two about him, namely, some layers of... well, that sickness of the mind that plagues every soldier who's made a kill. Between you and me. Any recommendations to that?

*Quickly*

Tsh... And because I'm a petty little man, I'd just like to say that even though you would win, Hunter isn't suited to one on one and that Malik is a fairly capable and unpredictable fighter. Of course, and you just don't want to admit this, I know, your centuries of combat experience puts you far ahead of everyone else, including Kyros and me. You would fair best, against the one most likely to pull a knife on you.

Anyways, back to Kyros.

I suppose I could duel him then... If he's willing, of course.

As an accomplished warrior, Kyros has spread his fair share of death in combat.  He is someone who is slow to forget and to forgive himself for mistakes or crimes.  When he regrets something, he becomes depressed.  When he was much younger in his early years during the war, he was different of course.  He maintained a very hands-off attitude of his victims.  They were the enemy, he killed them, and that was that.  Faceless people with an unremarkable death.  At the end of the war, on his final mission within the enemy borders, he was able to observe the families of the victims of the war; some of whom spoke his name with hatred because he himself had killed their husband or their son.  That forced him to realize that every soldier had a life, was somebody's son, perhaps somebody's father.

When he came back, his attitude was unchanged for the most part; I think he was ignoring those realizations to the best of his abilities.  He had nightmares every so often though.  After his return from the war, he fell in love with a woman and they had a relationship for several years.  She's largely responsible for the empathetic person we see today; they went through a lot together and it taught him a lot about caring for others and considering their thoughts.  During that time, Kyros told me once that when he looked at a person in need, he saw himself, and felt their pain, and it made him want to lend his assistance.

As for the current situation, he's likely depressed again from the sound of it.  I'm not all-knowing of course, but I think that there are multiple causes.  Over the past few years he's had the opportunity to teach several students, and I'm sure he enjoyed their company.  Most are gone now, so he probably misses them.  Larger though, is probably the appearance of SALIGIA- I'm sure their presence to him was a reminder of the war and everything that happened after.  He's probably running through all his past mistakes in his head right now and regretting them.

The only thing I can think of right now to help him would probably just be to spend time with him; it will help fill in the gap from the missing students, and help distract him from his past.  I'm unsure though, to be completely honest.  This is something there is no true cure-all for.

*Malkior loses what energy he had from drafting up the roster. Almost melancholically:*

Hmm... Poignant, I suppose. How long you here for? I'm not so much the personable type. Besides, I'd probably just say something really stupid to him. I mean, it's not like I've never had problems like that myself, but I'd probably just say something like "get over it".

*He smiles* We have something in common.  I was never much of an "emotional support" type... though I'm sure you could have guessed that.  I can stay for a few days if necessary.  There's really no official time constraints, but I shouldn't dally for an unreasonable period of course.

Hmm... Today's... what? Wednesday? Do you mind staying through Saturday? I figure we can hold the tournament on Friday, when all the peasants are at the weekendsfest. The drunker, the better, probably, the spirits should exaggerate the glory.

Saturday will give everyone a last chance to give messages or to tidy up any messes made. That and it gives us a couple of days to talk to Kyros and prepare the students for the tourney. How's that sound?

Good, then. I've forgotten, do you still have the room set up? Your office still stands untouched, of course. The room shouldn't be in use anyways, so you can sleep there. Is there anything else you might need?

Sure thing. I'll start drafting the notice as soon as I'm done calculating this month's consumption.

*Malkior begins writing on the paper in front of him, already half-coated with an almost Gothic handwriting.*
